The robotic lander developed by Intuitive Machines landed safely on the Moon on February 22. It became the first privately developed spacecraft to touch the moon. And the first American spacecraft to do so in more than half a century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Nova-C lander, called Odysseus, landed in the southern polar regions of the Moon at 18:23 east of the IM-1 mission. It took controllers about 15 minutes after landing to confirm that they were receiving a signal from the lander on the surface. Having initially received only a weak signal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat we can confirm, without a doubt, is that our equipment is on the lunar surface and we are making a transmission,\u201d said Tim Crane, Intuitive Machines’ flight director for the landing attempt. \u201cSo congratulations, IM team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intuitive Machines postponed the landing for two hours to perform an additional flyby of the moon. The company said it found that the lander’s laser rangefinders, a key tool for a precise landing, were not working properly. Controllers have downloaded a software patch. To allow the lander to use in its place the payload of NASA’s Doppler lidar, originally intended to demonstrate the technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s essentially a core system that helps provide velocity and altitude information,” said Prasoon Desai, NASA’s associate administrator for space technology, of NASA’s payload during the landing broadcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Odyssey launched on February 15 on a SpaceX Falcon 9, which sent the spacecraft on a trajectory to the Moon. After commissioning a maneuver to test the spacecraft’s engine on liquid oxygen and methane, it performed two trajectory correction maneuvers before entering low lunar orbit on February 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first landing was by a privately developed spacecraft on the Moon. It was also the first soft landing of any U.S. spacecraft on the Moon since the last Apollo mission, Apollo 17, in December 1972.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IM-1 mission carried six NASA payloads through the agency’s Commercial Luar Payload Services (CLPS) program under an order issued in 2019, which was valued at $118 million after revision. The payloads focused on technology demonstrations. Including a navigation Doppler lidar, a navigation beacon, a radio frequency fuel tank sensor, and a camera to study dust plumes kicked up by the lander engine. Other NASA payloads included a laser retroreflector and a radio astronomy instrument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mission details<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

IM-1 also carried six non-NASA payloads. Columbia Sportswear provided a material identical to the one it uses for some of its jackets to test its use as insulation for the fuel tank. Two companies, Galactic Legacy Labs and Lonestar Data Holdings, transferred data archives on the lander. The International Association of Lunar Observatories launched two small astronomical cameras. Artist Jeff Koons provided a piece called “Moon Phases” that was installed on the lander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most ambitious of the non-NASA payloads was the EagleCam, created by students at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The EagleCam was designed to eject from the lander during its final descent, reach the surface in front of the lander, and capture images of its landing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three private missions attempted to land on the Moon before IM-1, and all failed. In April 2019, the Beresheet lander, built by Israel Aerospace Industries for the Israeli organization SpaceIL, crashed during its last descent to the lunar surface. When one of its inertial measurement units failed, it caused a “cascade of restarts” of the spacecraft’s avionics, which shut down the main engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In April 2023, the HAKUTO-R M1 lander, developed by the Japanese company Space, also crashed during its last approach to the Moon. The company found<\/a> that the onboard computer ignored the altitude information from the sensor. When the lander passed over the crater, it believed that the sensor was faulty, which led to the conclusion that the lander was on the surface when it was still five kilometers above it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Astrobotic, which also received the NASA CLPS award, launched the Peregrine lander on January 8 on the first ULA Vulcan Centaur rocket. However, a few hours after takeoff, a fuel leak occurred from the lander. According to Astrobotic, the leak could have been caused by a faulty valve that created excessive pressure and ruptured the tank. The leak forced Astrobotic to abort the landing attempt, and Peregrine burned up in the atmosphere when it returned to Earth a week and a half after launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NASA adopted a \u201ckick-the-gate\u201d approach to CLPS when the agency launched the program more than five years ago, recognizing that some missions would fail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“NASA leadership remains committed and continues to accept the risk that some of these missions may not be successful,” said Chris Culbert, NASA’s program manager for CLPS, at a January 31 briefing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When we decided to go down this path, we knew it was very, very hard to do, and it could turn out that not all of them would be successful, especially some of the very first ones,” Joel Kearns, deputy associate administrator for exploration in NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, said in an interview before Peregrine’s launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He argued that there would be no layoffs at NASA or in industry if the first missions failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The companies we believe in are in it for the long haul. We believe this is the best way to get U.S. industry to do this as a service rather than doing it ourselves.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
